They're a visible chronology of everything she's lived through, from scraped knees to stab wounds, and she sees the way that people look at her sometimes—all pity and vague nervousness that whatever has happened to her is contagious, bad luck transferring like a virus if they get too close to her.

Summary
Once, when Sam was little, there was a freak snowstorm—not a proper blizzard, by any stretch, but more snow than she'd ever seen in her life. She remembers laying down in it, making snow angels and feeling the way that the flakes melted on her skin, and she'd stayed outside long after she began to go numb from the cold.
It was only when she finally went back inside, peeling off soggy denim and a half-frozen sweater, that the pain hit.
Being outside in the cold, that wasn't the part that hurt—it was only once she started to thaw that the agony set in, tiny pinpricks at her fingertips that grew into flames that licked up and down her body. It was the sort of pain that couldn't be dulled or ignored, demanding to be felt.
She thinks of that a lot these days, and she wonders if maybe it will be less painful for everyone if she keeps her distance and leaves the warmth and sun to the people who actually deserve it.

Summary
She oscillates between extremes, clinging to Sam in one moment only to shove her away in the next. Shame creeps up her throat until it strangles her each time she reaches for Sam and her sister welcomes her with open arms, something like gratitude shining in her eyes as she pulls Tara close. It takes so little to fix Sam, to ease the weight of the world from her shoulders for a few precious minutes, and it just makes Tara feel worse because she could be doing that all the time, could be a source of comfort and support and love rather than giving them both whiplash as she pivots from soft embraces to words laced with venom.
She doesn't even know what she wants anymore.

Summary
On nights when sleep is impossible, her mind drifts to the stories she used to read Tara when they were kids. Of little red riding hood and wolves, fairytales with clear lines in the sand between good guys and bad.
She thought back then that she would always be one of the good ones. She would be the one to protect those she cared about. To protect Tara.
These days, she's not so sure what side of the line she truly belongs on. Broken promises to her sister, the twisted pleasure of hurting another person, Billy's eyes searching for hers in every reflection—those aren't the traits of a knight in shining armor. Maybe she's been a wolf this whole time, just pretending at being a good person until her true nature is revealed.

Summary
The problem with trying to avoid Tissaia is that Yennefer is also deeply curious. While there is a very large part of her that has no desire to become even tangentially involved in whatever Tissaia is up to, it is still outweighed by an almost burning need to know what, exactly, Tissaia’s plan is.
And that is how Yennefer finds herself lying awake in her tent that first night, the two halves of her warring with each other as she debates what to do. On the one hand, she’s quite comfortable right where she is. But on the other…
