    SHANE: Ilya, I'm gay.
ILYA: Yeah, not so gay you can't fuck Rose Landry.
SHANE: Oh my god. It was like, twice. And both times were complete disasters. I'm not sure she's looking for a repeat performance.
    ILYA: Oh, disasters like how?
SHANE: I'm not going into details.

    Shane goes into the details.

    Summary

Jack was mouthier, more confident, louder- qualities Dennis knew made a good doctor and an excellent ER doctor, of all things. He was Robby's parallel in a lot of ways, the one who could cut in, but bring gentleness when he needed to. He’d seen it firsthand from the quiet corners where he observed, from the fleeting glances of understanding the two older men shared in shift changes.

Jack took another hit, his eyes fluttering shut, and Dennis found himself strangely entranced by the salt and pepper in his hair, in the way the curls flipped behind his ears, and he could feel his own mouth water and his stomach flip at the sight. Which was… something to note. An inappropriate physical reaction to his appreciation. His appreciation for Robby having such… good-looking friends.

It was the secondhand smoke getting to his head, surely.

    ----

Whitaker doesn't see the appeal of Dr. Jack Abbot. Robby has always seen the appeal of Dr. Jack Abbot.

    Summary

    “You’re lying.” Whittaker whines.

“I’m not! I’m not! Just..” Robby smiles, flicking his cigarette. Whittaker hums, a sort of ‘go on.’

“He reminds me of you, when you first started.” He says, carefully neutral. And Whittaker almost gets defensive before he realizes Robby isn’t entirely wrong. Robby smiles, nudging him with his knee.

Whittaker blinks at him a few times. And then, then he says something that neither of them had expected in the slightest.

“Does that make him your new favorite?” He asks, quietly. And it startles Robby. They stare at each other for a moment. Whittaker looks nervous, like he regrets even speaking. And Robby, he doesn’t quite know how to respond.

Slowly, Robby takes the last drag off his cigarette. Huffing as he presses the ember against the wood on the bench between them. He flicks his head and hums. Whittaker watches him quietly.

“You really have matured.” Robby snorts, and Whittaker frowns, crossing his arms and leaning forward to catch Robby’s downturned gaze. Before he can throw a fit, Robby speaks.

    Or

Dennis and Robby smoke together after their shifts.

    Summary

Dana blows smoke up and away from him. “I can do small talk for five minutes,” she says, flicking ash. “Or we can do the thing.”

He looks down at the yellow chevrons scuffed to chalk. “I don’t –"

“It’s Robby,” Dana says – no question mark, no flair.

The heat blooms behind his ears. It's absurd, the way his body betrays him; he's fifteen at the church picnic again, caught looking at the pastor’s son and at a hot dish in equal horror. He swallows. The door sighs open, then shut.

Dana doesn’t let Dennis hide behind small talk.

Dennis can count chevrons and recite Psalms and pass every safeguarding module the hospital can throw at him, but none of it changes the truth: he and Robby are not peers.
