“That seemed to hit a nerve, Day.” Andrew raises an eyebrow, seemingly unimpressed by Kevin’s outburst. “I’m sure you had wonderful birthday parties at the Nest that you are missing out—”
“Shut. Your. Fucking. Mouth.”

Fresh out of the Nest, Kevin does not want to be reminded of his birthday. Andrew, being Andrew, helps him along.

Summary
They stay like that for a while. Andrew examines Kevin’s hand, squeezing, rubbing, until the memory of the pain is almost gone. It’s replaced by that feeling Kevin always gets when he’s around Andrew. A warm, fuzzy, unusual feeling he can only describe as: safety.

The non-committal sound Kevin makes next is immensely self-satisfied. “Are you taking pity on me, Andrew?” He asks, with the kind of faux deferentiality that makes Andrew wonder why this kind of behavior has gone through Kevin’s entire life unchecked. “Are you actually taking pity on me?”
