In the sixth year of our marriage, my husband's secretary shyly pulled out a jade pendant in front of me. She claimed it was a token of love that Victor had given her 15 years ago. Before I could say a word, Victor exploded. He slapped the table with both hands, the sound echoing through the room, and shouted.
“I knew it!! You stole my jade pendant!”
I froze. So did the secretary. She panicked and grabbed Victor's hand, trying to lift the pendant for him to see.
“No, no, you gave this to me yourself fifteen years ago.” she insisted. “Don't you remember? I'm your little sister.”
Victor flung her hand away in disgust.
“My little sister? Then I must be a two-faced turtle.” He narrowed his eyes, staring at the pendant. “You're saying I gave this to you myself?”
The secretary nodded, her eyes welling with tears, delicate as a weeping pear blossom.
