Overhead was a full moon, her silver light bathed the Crossroads. Magic was all around them, the swelling of revelry, shades danced, even Odysseus was laughing with his whole gut tonight. More than magic, something was lifting Melinoë’s bones, making her light as a feather. A night of realizations, a night of full fruition and climatic ends, tonight was no accident that the young princess snuck out into Erebus. Something - or rather someone - was waiting for Melinoë in the darkness, and the only thing standing between the young woman and her month's worth of plans coming true was the Witch of the Crossroads.

She had read all of his papers.
That was the first thing Zandik learned about her, a week before she even set foot in the institute. He had been sitting in the conference room, waiting for the director to give her speech, when he overheard two administrative assistants discussing the new hire. Brilliant, they said. Exceptional and unconventional. She had specifically requested to be placed in Dr. Zandik's division.
He had not reacted immediately. He had kept his eyes on the window and his hands folded on the table, still and composed as always. But something in his chest had shifted, a small, precise displacement, like a variable introduced into an equation that had until then been perfectly balanced.
Her name was Lumine.
