Ed was twenty-six years old, and he had never felt more like a child. Riza sat calmly across from him, a soft expression on her face, as if she felt sorry for him. He wanted to take her by the shoulders and shake her–to tell her she should scream and break things and be angry. He wanted her to take his hand and say, sorry Edward, you’re right, we won’t go through with this. He wanted for her to have not done the terrible things that she had, he didn’t want her to go to prison, or to stand blindfolded in front of a firing squad. He didn’t want things to be the way that they were.

The following are archived letters retrieved from the late Fuhrer Roy Mustang’s estate. Having no living family, the State seized control of the Mustang home two years following his death in 1962. The staff at Central Library North has read, sorted, and displayed several historical mementos found throughout the Fuhrer’s personal office, including what appear to be love letters and general musings between Amestris’s esteemed leader and a woman called simply, Elizabeth.

For once, Roy found his mind completely blank. He was sitting in a restaurant across from Riza Hawkeye, at a table lit by romantic candlelight. She was holding his hands, her thumb absently drifting back and forth over his knuckles. There were violins playing somewhere, for god’s sake. He should have been attempting to listen in on Edison again, or passing information to her in code, or something, but all he could think was that she was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen and that it was becoming a problem.
