    Doha feels unsteady on his feet. That thread of unfamiliar, floral fragrance tugs at him, a string around his throat beckoning up, up, up to this stranger. The man watches him with those lidded, red-bright eyes, and his smile punctures something soft and vulnerable inside Doha. What does he see, looking down upon this Prince like a small insect? What does he know to smile so?

    Doha opens his mouth — intending to say something like Who are you, or What’s your name, or even You’re so beautiful. May I touch you? May I look at you closer?

    What comes out instead is a fear-sharp lash of, “Don’t smile at me like that.”
