The guy was tenacious, and affectionate, and incapable of not staring at his backside.
Regardless, Rafael had been burned before, and it wasn't about to happen again. A pair of blue eyes and a voice that should absolutely not be charming were not about to change his mind.

Sonny works hard, he knows when you really want something, you have to put in the effort. Sometimes, you even have to put your dignity on the line or you'll always be stuck wondering what could have been.
He wants SVU to work this time, he wants his new colleagues to like him, he wants to pass law school whilst working full-time as a detective.

“You’re really intending to sit the bar next week? In the condition you’re in?”
“Yeah? I mean, is that so hard to believe? I’m just a little roughed up is all.”
“Roughed up?” The counselor repeated, his voice tinged with disbelief. “You were shot by an assailant. You have a head wound. And you think that putting yourself through a bar exam is the correct way to recover from that?”
With a sigh, Sonny sank back into the pillows on the bed. “Look, I appreciate the concern, Counselor, I really do. But I know you’ve worked really hard for things you’re not willing to give up on, even when the odds weren’t in your favour. Maybe it’s a dumb idea to assume I can think straight enough to pass the bar after hitting every stair on my way down, but I don’t want to not try - I’ve put a lot into this, and I’m not givin’ up, not now. Not so close to the finish line.”
