He snapped to attention when Randale requested it. He met the gruelling pace of his missions with stony resilience, continuing even when the others around him flagged and fell. Older and wiser than when he was first Chosen, he was a skilled and competent Herald, soldier, and mage who had learned to follow orders and was lucky enough to receive orders he could live with.
He would have noticed a spell burrowed under his skin - and if not, his Companion surely would have. But Yfandes raised no alarms until the day they were stopped on the roadside of a small village at the edge of Valdemar.

There’s something wrong with Simon. She can smell it on his skin, slightly musky and tinged with guilt and fear that made her stomach roll. He’s flushed, too, skin pale and clammy; he was sick, her brain supplied as a suggestion, or Baz had upset him. By the time he stopped in front of her, sickness seemed more likely; there was something off about his smell that had nothing to do with the sharpness of anger or hurt.

In the aftermath of Peter's torture and the reveal of his superhero identity to the rest of the Avengers, our friendly neighborhood teenager grapples with a deeply impacted sense of self. Thankfully, he has Tony and the rest of the team by his side every step of the way.
“So this is the kid.” Clint shot Tony a flinty, uncertain look as Peter gave the gathered Avengers a nervous smile, the boy wringing the soft material of his mask in his hands. The kid we saw tortured went unspoken. As did the kid who you dragged to Germany, the kid we fought against, the kid we could have hurt or killed without ever knowing.
