“It’s Luke’s war,” Percy answered. Not shouting, but resolute.
Annabeth spun on him like he’d screamed. “This is Kronos. Not Luke.”
“Maybe, but it was Luke who just led the charge against camp.”
Annabeth faltered, and then turned back to Thalia. “He’s angry at his dad. You know he is, but he’s being manipulated by Kronos. He thinks he’s helping everyone.”
Luke attacked the camp? At face value, Thalia wasn’t terribly shocked. He had been the most resistant to coming at all and even more vocal than she about his anger at their parents. Doing something like this to piss them off sounded about right.
But… What was this about Kronos? And… Annabeth was wearing one of the orange shirts. That means she’s a camper, right? She stayed. So if Luke attacked Camp— “Were you here when he attacked?”
Annabeth’s eyes pressed closed, but Percy stepped forward. “Yes.”

“I’m sorry,” he told her.
And that only threw her back into heavy, heavy sobs, it taking several minutes of hearing Percy mutter apologies before she could get out, “Don’t apologize to me.”
He just kept wiping away tears from her cheeks even as more fell. “I didn’t want to leave you,” he said, his voice properly shaky for the first time. “I said I would never leave you. I didn’t leave you,” he repeated like a mantra.
Like a lifeline.
“I left you,” Annabeth cried.
Percy shook his head. “No. Never.”

Summary
Percy knew he should leave, for his own sake. He knew that hearing the merfolk speak about him the way he was spoken about at his weakest would only leave him feeling more vulnerable and depressed.
He didn't leave. He stood there, if maybe even inched a little bit closer to try and deduce who was speaking and to hear even better.
A woman began to speak, her voice painfully high-pitched and he heard the clapping sound of two hands meeting together. “Father, please!” More rowdy laughter.
OR
Percy's no good, very bad, awful day where he gets invited to his father's and stepmother yearly anniversary party and hears his siblings make fun of him.

He reached out again, this time wrapping his fingers around her wrist. And gods, this was so much harder to resist than just grabbing her shirt. "Think about it, your best friend is about to spend this beautiful afternoon all alone in the dark, completely weak and helpless. How can you do this to me, Annabeth?"
Or: A small accident made Percy lose his sight temporarily, and now Annabeth has to drag him around like a lost puppy.

Again, in hindsight, he probably shouldn’t have tried to block a gods-damned spear with his bare hands. Because, surprisingly, the spear would, like, 99.9% pierce through his armor and then his very vulnerable skin into his equally vulnerable flesh if he tried to do that. So, yeah. Definitely the stupidest one on the long list of Stupid Things Percy Had Ever Done.
But then again, at least it didn’t run through his girlfriend, which should really be considered a win.Or: Percy lets his fatal flaw get the best of him again. Annabeth is not thrilled.
