   Summary

   He thinks of his own children, and he surprises himself with the sudden, overwhelming longing to have had them as infants, to have had the chance to hold them like this, comfortable and lulled by warmth and baby-soft skin. His chest tightens, his heart squeezed tight at what he didn't get, won't ever get. He thinks about all the firsts he missed, all the things he hadn’t really realized he never got.
