Summary
"Do you still have a crush on me?"
The words barely audible escape Charles's lips before he realizes it, as if he's once again lost the connection between what he's saying and what he's thinking.
Edwin freezes at his seat, standing in front of a book open on the table, his hands stopping halfway to it. He lifts his head abruptly, and his gaze fixes Charles in place, as if mesmerized.

Summary
The marks Edwin's fingertips make on Charles' skin are neither cold nor warm, but palpable enough to send a metaphorical jolt through his body from the touch. Charles makes a pleased sound and Edwin finally realizes what just happened. Payne takes a sharp breath, as if he still needs to breathe, and pauses for a moment, meeting Charles's gaze.
"I'm sorry, I..." Edwin jerks his hand away, clenching it into a fist.
"Edwin..." Charles begins, but finds himself at a loss for words. He tries to gather his thoughts in his head, but they flow away, not wanting to form words, leaving in his consciousness only traces of someone else's touch, sending electrical impulses through his body, so clearly felt as if he were still alive.

“No one’s asked me for a story in quite some time," said Mr. Payne.
“Well, tell me one, then,” said Charles, swinging his legs at the counter.
“Very well,” said the old man. “How do you feel about mysteries?”
Or,
Edwin doesn’t die in 1916. Charles doesn’t die in 1989. They meet anyway, at the end of one life and the start of another.
