Kole leaned against the corner of the bar, nursing a beer and asking herself for the umpteenth time why she kept coming back to the Hard Deck. She adored Penny and was still thankful for the way the woman had welcomed her with open arms when she moved back to San Diego. But the never-ending carousel of TOPGUN trainees - complete with egos that could only exist when someone is told they are the best of the best - was something she could do without.
Rooster scanned the crowd while he waited for Penny to make her way around the bar to him. The usual mix of locals and Navy personnel was a welcome familiarity. As much as the rest of the world seemed to change, somehow the Hard Deck never did. Unless you count the redhead at the other end of the bar.
Hangman would never understand how a guy who moved as slow as Rooster did in the air never hesitated to take his shot on the ground. And when the pretty redhead shoots him down? Challenge accepted.

“I don’t see how that has anything to do with you,” Felix snapped in reply as he rummaged through the fridge, trying to find something to drink that wasn’t alcohol.
