For all the jokes she’s made about Joel’s name twin, on the day Joel Hendrix is brought back beaten and bloody in a body bag, Ellie isn’t feeling very light-hearted.
Especially when the body is followed by his sobbing daughter, only a year older than Ellie herself. She keeps her eyes on Tanner as she staggers by, held up by Tommy, who was sent out on the rescue patrol to bring the Hendrixes back after they broke protocol and split from their group to go after an elk and then failed to check back in.
Apparently they found something significantly worse than a lucky hunt in the middle of winter.

“Leave it alone, Ellie,” he says, not sure what kind of creature it is that she’s communing with, but absolutely sure that, regardless of what it is, it’s not something she should be getting near.
She pops back into his line of sight, out from behind a bookcase in the science fiction section, a bright grin lighting up her face. She’s holding a goddamn puppy.

She had an old tattered t-shirt and some old gray sweatpants on, but no shoes. She was playing with an old dirty giraffe plush whose neck hung down limply from years of play. She seemed to pay no mind to the fact that she was sitting beside a complete stranger and seemed to be lost in playing with her toy
