It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. But it wasn’t necessarily like you could say no, either— your grandfather had passed, and left the farm in your name. The animals you had grown up caring for, every summer spent tending to their every beck and call.
Except you hadn’t been back. Not for years. Summers turned into time to work and save for college, study for the SATs, and then finally college applications that dragged you into the city.
And then, a heart attack yanked him from the life you had shared together, with your name down as the caretaker to the farm you had loved so deeply.
You’re terrified when you pull up beside the beat-up truck you had spent years begging your grandfather– Pa– to let you drive.
“It’s all cornfields and half-paved roads, Pa!”
“Exactly my damn point, Dove.”
Dove. The name carved above the front doors of the barn, still visible despite years upon years of weather and wear.
This was all for you.
And your neighbor? She isn’t too keen on newcomers— especially the new city girl.
She’s all dirt-coated boots, sun-kissed skin, and a perfect braid, no matter how long she’s been out training. And she’s miserable towards you.
