The truth is, since David and Patrick broke up, David hasn’t been the same. And he doesn’t know why.
He’s got loads of exes. Plenty of people who he’s loved and he’s lost. Who have wronged him and who he’s recovered from. He could write a book of people who he’s gotten over that he felt something for once. But this is different. It doesn’t leave his head, not that day, not the day after that, or the day after that. This is different, it’s bleeding, it’s raw, because he’d had time to fix it and didn’t come around in time. Because Patrick had reached out and reached out and reached out and when David finally turned around, there was just smoke.
So Patrick...Patrick he doesn’t get over.

Summary
If the Warners took David, that meant they realized David wasn’t who he appeared to be and Patrick would likely be here soon if he wasn’t already on the premises. While being kidnapped was mostly just inconvenient, the real issue at hand was that David hated when more people found out the truth, even a minor wannabe family mob like the Warners.

“I want Stevie to stay,” Patrick said, lying next to David in the dark.
“She’s in her room, honey,” David said, words muffled against his pillow. He reached blindly for Patrick’s hand. This wasn’t the time to start this conversation, but Patrick wouldn’t be able to sleep otherwise.
“No, David, I want her here, with us,” Patrick said. He ran his thumb over David’s rings. “She still has feelings for you. And I know you love her.”
“I love you, Patrick,” David said and it filled Patrick’s heart to hear him say it so easily.
“I know you do,” Patrick assured him, “We’re okay, David.”
“But Stevie’s not,” David said, tone colored with understanding.
“She’s not.”
“And we love her.”
“We do,” Patrick said, feeling the smooth metal of David’s rings until he fell asleep.
