Summary
My chest is so tight Sgaeyl might as well be laying on it. Each breath scrapes and tears at my lungs before making its way out of me in a shaky stream. The bed under me feels more like a coffin every time I glance towards the empty spot on my right. The churning ball of dread in my stomach eats away at my insides until I feel bile burning its way up my throat.
I don’t know how to handle this. I have had to cope with her absence more times than I consider bearable, but this time feels more condemning than any before. Yet once again, I have no one to blame but my own sorry ass.

"Dream," she manages, and Bodhi relaxes a bit, less ready to go deal with a physical threat to her safety. "In my dream, they were in my room, and I didn't have Andarna's power and there were just so many and he had a knife to my throat and I couldn't stop him–" The words spill out of her like a torrent, like they've been ripped from her very soul, tinted with fear and the helplessness of impending death. She's not sure she's making any sense, and she's almost crying now, the adrenaline making her shaky and weak. "And Xaden never came, Bodhi. Xaden never came."
It's a sob, the last sentence. The first of many as she crumples, finally able to cry for something she thought she's long dealt with. But she realizes it's been a year since Oren held a knife to her throat, since the first time Xaden came to her rescue, and Xaden is not here.
