She knew he had not agreed with what was about to happen, but the will of her mother and the desperate need to improve their station had overridden them. It was then a horrible truth she had yet to accept: she was to be married.

My outburst has garnered unwanted attention and I’m sweltering under their heavy appraisal, spiraling in the room’s torturous dead air. My chest and stomach constrict, I’m suffocating from the inside out. Each errant thought pulls me tighter into the whirlpool of uncertainty. Despite my more than obvious public display of hysteria, no one moves, none of them wanting to speak first. Surprisingly, it’s Dr Solo who breaks the reverie.
