Joel glances at her, her knee bouncing in time to the music, sitting cross-legged and sock-footed. Sneakers toed off a second after they got into the car at six this morning.
Sweet voice, singing along under the music. Jean shorts and a worn-soft, NASA t-shirt he bought her on the first trip he took her on. That first year of her showing up in his life, trying to give her all the things she didn’t have before he knew about her. Trying to show her he wasn’t gonna leave her. Wasn’t gonna get rid of her.
It still hits him sometimes, that she’s his. That she existed out in the world for twelve years before he even knew about her. This… pretty little thing with bright green eyes and a smile that he’d kill to keep seeing.
They’ve still got another five hours to the next stop, dinner and a hotel in Biloxi. Another seven hours tomorrow before they hit Ocala and then Disney to meet up with the other half of the Miller family— but he knows, deep in his gut, he’d rather keep her just like this. Just him and her. Cheap motels like she asked, just you and me, Joel. Like a real road trip from a movie— where no one knows them.
Just them.

Summary
The building is overgrown the way most are now, wildlife seeping into structures that used to be solid and whole and clean. But it’s the sign right inside the broken door that catches her eyes more, a stand, filled with old, thin pages stapled together.
“Giants of the Past,” she reads, sucking in a little breath and then scans the space, catching sight of bones that look like the dinosaur on the cover of the thin book. “Joel! Is this a museum?”
“Nah, it’s a chicken coop.”
She shoves at him with a laugh. “Fuck off.”
He grins, tugging at her shorts. “C’mon. More to see, kiddo.”
