Summary
"Soda's chest tightened painfully and he doubled over as the weight of it all settled squarely on his shoulders. If he didn't act soon, very soon, the pole would give way entirely, and Pony and Darry would both be flattened under the full weight of the semi. He would lose them both. He had to choose.
He had to choose.
How could he ever choose?"
xxx
A car accident leaves Sodapop Curtis faced with an impossible choice. One he's not sure he can bring himself to make.

Summary
“Did it have instructions on how not to burn water?” Darry raised a brow.
“That was only once!” Soda defended himself, “Twice, tops.”
Pony leaned back, plate empty and stomach full. The meal, the banter, the way the kitchen light highlighted Darry’s tired face and Soda’s grin; it all wrapped around him like a blanket. He looked at their faces, smiling softly to himself.
“Thanks Sodapop,” Pony said like an afterthought, “for the food. And, y’know, all of it.”
Soda studied his face carefully, caught off guard by the sudden change in mood. “Anytime kiddo. We’ll have to do somethin’ like this more often.”
—
When Ponyboy gets assigned an extra credit project, he has no clue what to write about — until he starts keeping a list of the little things he notices he was missing. Meatloaf dinners, borrowed clothes, a spot on the couch that’s always saved for him. The Curtis house is loud, chaotic, and full of life — and somewhere in the mess, Pony realizes it’s more than just a place to live. It’s home.

Summary
Two officers stand in the living room, looking uncomfortable and out of place. Darry’s brothers sit together on the couch, practically crumpled over each other, Ponyboy clutched in Soda’s arms as they both shudder with sobs.
The sounds tear at Darry’s heart, sending it to the floor as he rushes over, checking them for injuries, bandages, anything that could have warranted something like this. He doesn’t understand. Nothing adds up. “What’s wrong?”
OR
Darry is the last of the brothers to learn about the accident that took their parents' lives.

Summary
“Glory, Pony, you’re burning up.”
“That makes sense,” his little brother mumbles, then puts his head in his hands.
“No wonder you’re up,” Darry says to him, moving to grab for the thermometer in the kitchen cupboard.
“Hey—” Pony says as Darry shoves the thermometer in his mouth.
“Don’t talk,” he says, pushing back his hair from his forehead. “Have you been feeling this way all day?”
“You said don’t talk,” Pony responds around the thing in his mouth.
Darry rolls his eyes. When it’s done, it reads a cool 102 degrees. Darry winces. “You should probably stay home tomorrow. Friday, too. Maybe Soda or me could—”
“I ain’t a baby, Darry, I can stay home by myself,” Pony insists tiredly, his pale and flushed face betraying him.
