    Summary

“That looks foul,” Harrow said, of Gideon’s clear plastic cup. The drink was a pale, muddy brown, slightly foamy on top, and had a lime wedge floating in it. The lime had been cut very badly, probably with a dull knife. There was a ragged tail of pith hanging on to one side. Harrow pursed her lips in disgust.

“It’s a Jägerita,” said Gideon, as if that was a rebuttal. “Have a drink, Harrow. Or don’t, and just try and find an ounce of organic chill for once in your life.”

Harrow gave her a good shove with one hand on her shoulder, not really putting too much behind it, but Gideon swayed with it gamely like they’d choreographed it. She bounced back upright like one of those sign standees with sand packed into the base.

Then puberty hit, and Gideon was taller than ever, broader in the shoulders and getting breasts long before Harrow. And a strange thing started to happen: all of a sudden something simple like Gideon bumping her shoulder into Harrow’s made Harrow’s heart rattle around like a rat in a trap. She did not want to hold Gideon’s hand, or go to a movie and hide in Gideon’s shoulder during the scary bits. She wanted worse things - for Gideon to knock her into the grass when they played lacrosse during gym, to crush Harrow like a bug beneath her weight like she used to do when they were little and would tussle on the playground. Harrow had lost every time and still gone back for more. She wanted to figure out what deodorant Gideon used so she could buy it.

Harrow doesn’t actually hate the dog. Oh, sure, she’ll say she does if asked. If asked she’ll roll her eyes and say that it’s almost as big a waste of resources as Griddle is. But then, Harrow doesn’t actually hate Griddle, either.

Gideon gets a pet. Harrow wants a pet, too.

Harrow nods, as though she hadn’t once worried that Gideon would throw her offer back, unwanted. “Good. Then follow me.”
She moves past Gideon and doesn’t turn to see if she’s following. When Anastas lifts her head to see what’s happening, Harrow gestures for her to stay, and she does. And Harrow feels powerful. She feels so powerful in that moment, with these two lovely creatures doing as she wills. She feels so powerful, knowing that she has Gideon behind her, knowing that she can give Gideon something good. She wants to sink into this feeling, and she will.

    Summary

“So what you’re saying,” she said, “is that you are an awful, terrifying creature of the night. That you are driven by a desire for blood and suffering. Which is, I want to clarify, nothing I have not always known, and you are, in fact, apparently less awful as a vampire. But, no, shut up, I’m processing shit here. You are nightmares made flesh and all that good stuff and you are also still a picky eater?”

Ten years after they first parted ways, Gideon finds out that her childhood enemy Harrowhark is now a vampire with a delicate stomach. Sucks to be Harrow--pun fully intended--because Gideon is one of the few people whose blood she can stomach. Gideon is never going to let this go.

    Summary

    "Who are you?" Agatha asked.

Death took her in for the first time, in complete silence. Her form looked a lot like Agatha's, except for some subtle, unsettling differences. Agatha felt the burn of hatred at the belonging that came from existing in her proximity, held onto it with a vice grip. Something seemed to dawn on Death's mind. Her gaze turned tortured with understanding.

"Everything you are not," she replied, and then in a softer tone, "everything you can't bring yourself to be."

    Bookmarker's Notes

Rio will stop. Once she gets the edge off, once she can survive the mind-consuming euphoria of touching Agatha, wanting Agatha, needing Agatha.
In her more lucid moments, Rio knows this to be bullshit. There are some cardinal truths to Rio's existence; she will always be there to take a dying spark Beyond, she will be standing there when the last living thing draws their dying breath, and she will need Agatha forever, in the way her immortal body needs her divinity to stay upright, not to collapse into bone dust. But the promise helps her move past the rejection, the unrequitedness of her feelings.
