“Yeah,” Jonathan breathes out. “I’m okay.” It’s not really true. But he’s still standing, so it can’t be a complete lie.
Can it?
Or, following Starcourt and the destruction of their cabin, Hopper and Eleven move in with the Byers. Life goes on. Jonathan struggles to go on with it.
But somewhere along the way, between breaking his hand, getting to know his two new roommates while reckoning with the changes between his two family members, falling (further) in love with Nancy and Steve, and witnessing his new household become a new family—and also just because it’s always inevitable—Jonathan gets there.

And I thought you'd want to know that even though the kids miss Will and El a lot they're getting by OK so far. Everybody is a little quieter but Mike isn't showing any signs of deppression which I know was like a legitimate concern. But you probably already hear about him from Nancy so I'm sure you already knew.
Anyways you don't have to write back if you just put a big check mark over this paper and do the "return to sender" thing or whatever that works and I'll know you got it.

Steve sighs, long and suffering. “Yeah, Robin. I’m aware of that.”

Jonathan Byers didn’t believe in soulmates. Not in the sense that they didn’t exist. He knew they were out there– in theory. He wasn’t naive enough to think that he’d actually find his. He also didn’t buy into the belief that you couldn’t live a happy life without finding your soulmate. He didn’t know anyone who had found their soulmate and they all lived perfectly happy and normal lives. There was just one benefit of finding a soulmate. Colors. The moment a person and their soulmate touch, their worlds are flooded with vibrant, beautiful colors. Without that person, you were stuck in a world of black and white. When Will goes missing, finding his soulmate is the last thing on Jonathan’s mind that is until he punches Steve Harrington in the face and his world is flooded with color.

Summary
Steve falls asleep on the carpet, head tipped back against the old couch. Jonathan debates waking him. Doesn’t. He drapes a blanket over him instead, careful not to touch too much.
Steve murmurs something in his sleep. Jonathan’s name, maybe. Maybe not.
Jonathan sits on the edge of the couch and listens to Steve breathe until the tightness in his chest eases just a fraction.
He doesn’t question any of it.
He’s tired of questioning things.
