It has only been a week, but in that week, Lance’s worry never abates. In that week, he remains steadfast to not linger on this worry, to use the time well. In that week, Lance does his best to engage with the advisors, for once, learning their names. In that week, Lance draws parallels to how their lives can shift and become better when Keith returns from battle, and how this new chapter may bring forth a new wave of prosperity to his home and Keith’s. To, perhaps, their shared home. So long as Keith returns.
And he will return.
He must.
He has to.
Lance knew his role from the start - a consort, a political pawn, a pretty face with a purpose. He never imagined that purpose would feel so much like surrender.

The prince stepped close to Keith, looking him directly in his eyes. “But I do not need someone to ‘rein me in,’ I am not a pet. I am the prince and am perfectly capable, and do not need you to tell me what to do. And secondly, don’t even for a second think that you’ll be the one to break me. You will most likely be gone within the month, so don’t get too comfortable. Do you understand, mullet?”
It must have been something in the way the prince was looking at him, or the stupid nickname, because suddenly the fact that Lance was the prince meant absolutely nothing.
Keith continued to hold his gaze. “Well good thing my job isn’t meant to control you then, your highness,” he said sneering. “It’s to protect you. So whether you like it or not, I’m with you. No matter how many things you do to make me miserable, you better get used to me because I’m not going anywhere.”

Lance is so close to drowning, but he’s never let anyone see, not his closest friends, not even his boyfriend Keith. He just wants the pain to stop. But isn’t it easier to let go than crawl back up?
There’s another pause. “Keith, are you okay?” Because like Lance, Hunk is caring. Hunk is kind and caring and attentive to his friends. He can hear the uncertainty and the fear that Keith is barely holding onto.
What if Lance left? What is he just up and left because Keith said he didn’t need him anymore- No, that’s preposterous. Right?
Something is wrong.
“Are you sure he’s not in?”

“I’ve been knocking at the door for the last ten minutes, and all the lights are off. He’s not here.”
