David didn’t want to get out of bed. Not for any reason that pertained to himself, it was just that he didn’t want to leave Matteo alone. The silent numbness that had taken root in Matteo’s heart, in his mind, scared David more than he could explain. He’d never seen his boy this low. Sad and quiet, yes, he’d seen that. Tired and lazy, he’d seen that, too. But never this. The limpness of Matteo’s whole body, the way his eyes dimmed so dark that there was no more shine to them. There was no twinkle to the pale blue of his eyes, and it frightened David to no end. He didn’t want to get out of bed because he didn’t want to leave, he didn’t want to go away and come back to find Matteo in the same position in their bed.

Matteo nods, suddenly nervous himself. “More than. I feel understood, and I’ve never felt that way before. I love you and I trust you.”
