Dear Brooklyn,
Didn’t think I’d actually do this.
I thought about crumpling this up, tossing it, and pretending I forgot. But for some reason here I am.
They gave me the name “HotRod.” I didn’t pick it, but whatever. I do like cars. Fast ones. Things that make you feel like you're not stuck.
Everyone thinks I’ve got it good. I’ve got friends. A reputation. I win fights. So that must mean everything’s perfect, right?
But no one sees what happens after school. No one sees how hard I have to work to keep the act up. There’s no room for mistakes.
There’s a guy I live with, he’s not my real dad. But he drinks like it’s his job and reminds me every day how lucky I should feel to even live in the same house.
Anyway, I’m not saying this so you’ll feel bad. I just figured if I had to write something honest, I should start with something true.

“Hanahaki disease,” he corrects, but it’s an afterthought. “I mean, yeah, the most likely culprit would be my girlfriend but I swear it isn’t her. And I barely spend time with anyone else outside of this place ‘sides my ma and my sensei. So, believe me, I’m all out of ideas.”
A strange sensation frissons up his spine and into his hair, making him shiver bodily. He looks around and finds Johnny leaning against a pillar at the far end of the hallway with his hands clasped in front of him, some book tucked up under his arm just the way Jimmy’s done. His eyes flick down the length of Daniel and then bore into his face steadily. Daniel swivels, panicked, to hiss, “Did you tell him?”
