Gradually, as with all things, the memories of him started to fade. Castiel stopped believing that Cain would reach out to him. At some point, he stopped caring altogether. The bitterness he had felt at all of those years just being thrown away for seemingly no reason stopped feeling like acid in the back of his throat. He returned to the beach, strictly in the mornings before work, sometimes to run, and sometimes just to watch the early morning sky change colour.
But tonight was the night. He had closed the cafe, bid goodbye to Jack and Gabriel as was normal. Went home to wash off the humiliation of the day. Make a simple dinner. Ate alone, watching Jeopardy! It wasn't really that different from a normal evening.
Except it was abnormal, in its own way. Because Castiel's mind kept being pulled back to Dean. To the green eyes Castiel couldn't look away from. His sun kissed skin. Lopsided smile. Not for the first time that day, Castiel found himself taking deep breaths, willing his hammering heart to calm down.
