Summary
Dennis Whitaker’s earliest memory’s smelt of sun-burnt grass and the deep skunk of cattle manure; he remembered the itch of weeds, scratching up his arms and legs, leaving him with rashes and cuts; he could hear the sweet sizzling of food from the kitchen and the mare’s snorting. Those days seemed to be tinted in an ever present green, a façade of freeness and unrestricted laughter, and though he also remembered the sharp pain on his knees and back, the mumbled hymns and the cross that seemed to burrow into his breastbone, the happy chirps of cicadas would forever override them whenever he would sink back into memories of the farm.
