Summary
Pete holds on tight and waits for a sign from the universe that it’s right.
He gets it. He wins a poker tournament that the boys throw while all holed up under a tent, and he wins a couple dollars and one of Barkovitch’s joints. He wins it on pure, unadulterated luck, right from the gods into his lap. Then, as if it weren’t obvious, a second sign. Their next assignment, announced the next morning, takes them back to Da Nang. The second the Major announces it, Pete and Ray look right at each other. Our first time. Pete looks forward again, and begins cooking up a celebration for them, in the same place where it began.

“Pete, I’m sorry” Ray insists. “I didn’t mean what I said.”
Pete refuses to look at him, afraid as he is of crumbling in front of his pleading eyes.
“Go inside, Ray.”
“I didn’t want to seem ungrateful. I’m just –”
“You know what?” Pete cuts him off midsentence. “Tomorrow you’ll call your mom and ask her to come pick you up, and I’ll be out of your damn life forever and my choices won’t impact you ever again.”

Rain drips down the slope of Pete's nose, over his full lips. He's lying on his scarred cheek, pressing that sensitive and intimate part of himself down on Ray's shoulder. He shifts his face, rubbing his hair against the bare skin of Ray's neck, sending shivers through his entire body. Ray adjusts himself as subtly as he can. Accidentally squeezes Pete's muscular shoulder a little bit. Prays that he won't notice.
Watches, holding his breath, as Pete keeps dreaming.
Wonders if he's dreaming about a stocky, sweaty redhead, hauling bales of hay in the stuffy Maine spring.
