Colin looked between the twins, hoping his expression conveyed contentment. "I've placed an advertisement in the newspapers. For help."
Amanda eyed him skeptically. "Like a housekeeper?"
Colin steeled himself for the reactions his next words might provoke. "No, not like a housekeeper. More like…a wife."
The only sound for the few seconds that followed was the rustling of the leaves in the breeze outside.
"You mean a mother?" Oliver asked quietly, his eager voice barely above a whisper.
"Yes, she would be your mother." He glanced over at Amanda who still had not spoken. "Of course, she would never replace your mother. But she would be like a mother to you. Helping you like a mother would and doing things around the house like a mother would, too."
The children said nothing. Oliver regarded him curiously while Amanda stared at her bowl of stew. Colin cleared his throat and pulled a slip of paper from his pants pocket. "Anyhow, I have received an answer."

Penelope stood in his doorway, biting her bottom lip and peering up at him hesitantly, drenched from head to toe, dripping water all over his ‘A Silly Goose Lives Here’ doormat (something Hyacinth had gifted him when she was six years old—she had him pegged from a very young age).
He hadn’t seen Penelope in weeks—twenty-two days, five hours and…six…minutes to be exact—not that he was counting. The memory of the last time he’d seen her popped up into his mind without permission—her frantically whispered apologies hitting his ears, even as his lips still tingled from the warmth of hers, as she ran from his life, taking his shattered heart with her.
“Colin…” She was twisting her hands together nervously. “I’m sorry to bother you like this…” Her voice was shaky, and she glanced down and took a breath, seemingly to compose her nerves. “I just…”
“Are you okay?” Colin couldn’t help but ask. No matter how angry or hurt he was, he still cared for her deeply, and he could not hide his concern at seeing her show up on his doorstep in this state.
