I love the... texture? of this story. It's rich with sensory information and historical details, but somewhat less generous with the emotional details that make up so much of fanfic. We get semi-delirious WWX but, in keeping with the character, there's not a lot of naming or dwelling on what he's feeling. And LWJ is such a mystery here, I'm so curious about what he's ruminating on and what decisions he's going to make as a result. It's a beautiful trick, gaining character investment without that emotional volume.

When will I learn that every time I think something like, "Sex worker LWJ? I didn't think that's my jam" somewhere a brilliant author will have definitively shown that I am wrong? Dark and lots of sexy, but the alchemy of LWJ raised along with Meng Yao is so interesting - their relationship felt very real and honest in what might in other hands have been a shallow premise. Really enjoyed this spin on his character.

Summary
