Summary
“Nervous?” Richard chuckled.
Eddie looked sheepish. “Mostly scared.”
Richard knew the feeling. Even setting aside Anita’s troubled pregnancy, he’d spent nine months and three days staring at himself in the mirror every morning as he shaved and brushed his teeth, watching his own face and wondering what it meant for him to be a father. He’d always imagined himself as one. That was life, back then: land a good job, land a better girl, buy a big house and have pups. But Anita’s health slowed the process to a crawl, and Richard had nagging thoughts in the back of his head: what if this is a sign? What if we’re not meant for this? What if this is wrong? Most nights he fell asleep cradling Anita and fighting against the questions that plagued him even at rest.
And then Stevie was born, chubby and screaming and the most beautiful thing Richard had ever seen. And the fear went away.

Summary
Eddie’s never been very good at the whole scent thing.
He knows there’s a difference between scents and smells—Steve can smell like sweaty pits after a run but he scents something spicy and woodsy all the time—but he doesn’t understand the nuance of a person’s scent. It can fluctuate based on emotions, or the time of year, or because Eddie bought a carton of six eggs and not the dozen like Steve asked; Nancy is good at understanding the subtleties, and Steve too, but Eddie’s just never been able to.
So when Steve starts smelling different, he chalks it up to a new deodorant or something in the shower. It’s not a bad scent, like the time he had appendicitis and kept saying he was just constipated, it’s just different. Noticeable.
Or: glimpses into pregnant life.
