Villanelle watched the microcosm of reactions that expressed terror and appreciation and annoyance and fascination flit across Eve's face. She had forgotten the effect it had on her. Playing with other people, manipulating them, that got boring in minutes. Killing them barely raised her heartbeat. But the slightest furrow of Eve's brow had her enraptured.
It would have been nice if she knew why. Maybe if she studied Eve for long enough, she would find out.

Wednesday’s touch was so light she couldn't help but look down for just a split second, almost unsure it was happening.
“You’re…warm,” Wednesday commented.
At that, Enid felt her face flush, tilting her head even further, like maybe she could make out how many tiny stems were on each tree if she tried hard enough.
“Are you always?”
“Hm?” Enid tore her eyes from the trees, landing directly on Wednesday as if there were no other destination for her eyes.
“Warm. You’re always this way?”
Enid let out a small laugh, shrugging her shoulders. She felt warmer than usual. In fact, she wasn't sure she ever felt this warm in her twenty-one years.
She didn't say that, though.
Instead, “I guess so.”

"Would you…Could you maybe pretend to be my alpha?" As the last few words left her mouth, she glanced at Wednesday and managed to catch the look of surprise cross her face.
For a while, everything was silent. Enid's fear turned to shame, and she opened her mouth to beg for forgiveness. She had been in love with Wednesday for a while, and she hoped that this wouldn't destroy their friendship. But before the words could leave her mouth, Wednesday spoke.
"I will pretend to be your alpha for the weekend."
