Arbelan didn’t know if Varenechibel had meant it as a kindness when he decreed that Maia was to join Arbelan in her relegation, or if he had meant to send a message (“this is what you could have had, had you provided me with the heirs I needed, but instead you get to raise my unwanted half-goblin”—because Varenechibel would see Maia’s goblin heritage as a mark against him), or perhaps to rub salt in the wound: she had longed so much for a child to cherish, and here was a child who was not her own. But she would cherish little Maia all the same.

The guard glanced sidelong at him, confusion visible in his furrowed brows and in the set of his ears.
“Some goblin workman. Can’t make any sense of it. He’s just been sitting in the corner.”
Beshelar raised his eyebrows, took a half-step over to glance inside. Half-goblin, he corrected internally, glimpsing to his surprise a teenager not so much older than his Serenity, knelt at the back of the room, murmuring prayers into his hands, Barizheise-style. Fraying workman’s clothes, dark curls, pale eyes shadowed by his bowed head. Unremarkable, for the most part.
What concern could such a person possibly have with his Serenity?
