No one can agree on the details—haunted by a sad ghost who wails in despair every night, owned by a fearsome witch that curses anyone who bothers her domain, resided by a shadow creature, possibly undead, who steals and wears the faces of their victims—but everyone knows to leave alone whatever dwells there. Jingyi lives down the street from it, just a five-minute walk up the rarely traveled, broken sidewalk that leads to the lonely black house, and he is not scared of it.

His robes are still whole, so the whip must not have touched him yet: but the sight of his bitten lip, already pierced through in anticipation of pain, is more than Jiang Fengmian can bear.
“Very well,” he says simply. “If you want Lotus Pier, then take it. Given that, I wonder how you can still have the face to demand that I punish A-Xian.”
Or: the one where Jiang Fengmian decides to turn back on his way to Qishan, and the capture of Lotus Pier goes somewhat differently as a result.
