She looked at her dad. Really looked at him. His hair was almost entirely silver, as opposed to Sherlock, who was just graying at the temples, and the occasional silver streak snaking through his curls. The lines on his face were a map of life lived along the edge. All the highest highs of solving cases, saving lives, and reveling in fatherhood in tandems with such unthinkable lows. Loosing her mother. Loosing Sherlock, for a time, and then all the fights and bitterness they’d both known in the aftermath. Rose didn’t know the full of it, but she knew they both accumulated a lot of guilt through the years. Neither of them were young men anymore, and they seemed out of practice being happy.
Rosamund Watson returns home for the holidays. As she gets older, she thinks more about all three of her parents— her dead mother, and her two living fathers. She’s not sure if she always likes the way her haunted little family hinges on her. She’s not sure if it can be any other way.
