“Why is it connecting us?” asks Remus, his voice safe and demure in Snape’s ear, his gold eyes bright with adventurous urgency.
“It can be difficult to discern,” replies Severus as he relays the same breed of oddity back to him — although copiously subdued — “but it’s doing an irritatingly thorough job of carrying through.”

𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟏. A new acquaintance to the territory of teaching, an old friend to grief and misfortune, and entirely off on the wrong foot, twenty-one-year-old Professor Severus Snape reverts to an old charm of his — a charm for things that are lost — in attempt to find the one book in which he wrote it. But when the spell starts working against him and mysterious things start happening to his own students, it seems he has no choice but to form an alliance with an old schoolyard enemy in order to find a culprit, a book, and his own identity. And one thing is for certain: the irritating charm of Remus Lupin is nearly impossible to refuse.

Summary
In the interest of providing Severus Snape additional strength to withstand Voldemort's Legilimency, Remus Lupin is recruited to participate in a utilitarian marriage bond with him. Remus's distraction during the ceremony leads to an unexpected side effect of the bond.

“That’s it?” Remus said, somewhat incredulously, as the light faded away. He’d expected more, somehow.
Severus nodded, lifting his hand to study the ring on his finger. “Congratulations, against all expectations, you succeeded in participating in the simplest of rituals.”
Remus felt a twinge of annoyance at his words, but it was overlaid confusingly with a sense of satisfaction. He frowned, trying to puzzle out why he would feel satisfied at Severus’s insult.
An expression of concern crossed Severus’s face, and he lowered his hand. He looked at Remus, his brows drawn together. Then his eyes widened, and surprise flooded Remus. It quickly turned to shocked anger.
“Albus, we may have a problem,” Severus growled.

Summary
"I believe I have made myself clear on the matter," he said crisply.
Remus couldn't help the laugh that bubbled out of him at that.
"Is that what you believe? Because from where I'm standing you've been remarkably unclear on" — he paused, lips pursing with amusement — "the matter."
Severus bristled. There was nothing he hated so much as being laughed at, but whatever venomous, overblown insult he had perched between his teeth died as Remus reached out and pressed a hand to the middle of his chest. Severus froze.
Remus was the taller of the two of them. Thinner, too, but naturally broader in the shoulders. His scarred, callused hand was large enough to cover Severus's entire breastbone and he was sure that if if weren't for the thick layers of the other man's robes he'd be able to feel both his collarbones, spanned between thumb and index finger. As it was, he could barely feel the steady, thudding beats of his heart.
"What are we doing, Severus?"
------------
After an Order meeting, Remus pulls Severus aside to discuss the things they haven't talked about. They get very little talking done.

Summary
Remus is too close. He has always been just this side of too close, ever since he found Severus sitting alone by the fire in the staff room reading a potions journal on ingredients native to south Asia and struck up a conversation.
Ever since conversation became habit.
And habit became letters.
And letters became an addictive, drawn out correspondence.
