Nahla Ake was not born of love.
No, she was not born of love, not at all; but she sure was raised in it. The Ake family was small—just Nahla, her mother, and her little brother, Wjil—but they were happy. When Nahla thinks back on those times, blurred by time and fondness, she can almost taste the familiar warmth, laughter. She never lets herself think about them as they are now, permanently in past tense.
After all, Nahla Ake is only half-Lanthanite. Her other half is, painfully, human.

It was hard to picture himself living that life, but it was better than where he currently was.

She was at the Byers’ to drop off a movie Jonathan had loaned her. It was any other Thursday night. Her bike was leaned neatly up against the front post. The night was chilled as the leaves around Hawkins started to fall. She wasn’t planning to stay, she just wanted to just shove it into someone’s hands and go home before her mom got off work. Max was good at sticking to her plans. She knocked and Joyce opened the door with that warm, relieved smile she gave everyone she cared about.
“Max! Sweetheart, come in.”
And idiotically, Max did.or, in the interim between the battle of Starcourt and the Byers moving away, Max stops by for a visit.
