No matter what he tried to do there was no way to get out of the arrangement.

Almost everyone has a soulmate. The age their soulmate will be when they meet is tattooed on their wrist. The age on John’s wrist is 20 years and 352 days, he has little hope he’ll meet his soulmate anytime soon, between his job at a bar, college, and his general distaste for parties he’s unlikely to meet anyone who shares his interests and isn’t able to drink. What he didn’t count on was his soulmate drinking underage even if only by thirteen days.
