Sabine did not bring a "fake boyfriend" to the family reunion.
She brought an "emotional support Jedi", who panicked when her mom started questioning him about his relationship with Sabine, and instead of saying he wasn't her boyfriend and maybe making her snoopy aunties suspicious, he just lied that he was her fake boyfriend.

Summary
He was tired, no longer useful and soon about to merge with Ozpin. He didn't want to fight anymore, so he doesn't. He knows he shouldn't, but deep inside. He hates him, hates Ozpin, hates his fate. And hates that he can't do anything about it. No matter what happens, nothing changes, and it ever so becomes pointless for him. The fact of the matter is, the game was rigged from the start. He wasn't making it out alive no matter what. And as much as he tries to convince himself that it was fine, and that everything was going to be okay, He didn't believe it. Not even for a second.
