Their understanding had always taken different paths. It had shaped their centuries together, the way the melodies of their two perspectives sometimes aligned in harmonious counterpoint, more often in discord. Elrond had learned to yield, to watch his king's wisdom and experience until he understood. He had learned humility – but he had also learned shame. He had learned to resign himself to Gil-galad's impatience and contempt.
He loved Gil-galad, that was the trouble, and he had never learned the trick of guarding his heart from the ones he loved.
Elrond and Gil-galad have That conversation.
