Summary
Castiel honestly didn't know why he was so against getting a pet in the first place. The human was easy to take care of, companionable, and quick to obey. Dean didn't have the same sleep rhythm or eating patterns as him but there was a certain charm in having his pet curl up beside him and nap or get excited about its meals.
He knew his pet was probably no more intelligent than most humans but with nothing else to focus on during a shipment it was hard not to be endlessly amazed at all the commands Dean could remember. He understood now why people bragged about their pets even if he was loathed to admit it.

Dean is adamant that this time he's found a way to keep the mark under control but it's clear to Castiel that Dean needs help if he's going to fight the mark's influence until they can find a way to get rid of it. More than anything Castiel wants to save him, but if anyone needs to be saved it's Castiel as he tries to navigate where Dean ends and the Mark of Cain begins.

Summary
AU following Swan Song. Castiel and Jimmy are both ghosts, reluctant to move on from life; while Dean is reluctant to carry on his life without Sam.
Castiel is unable to interact with the world the way most ghosts can but a mysterious new power seems to give him control over the death of other creatures, allowing him to restore life and heal the injured. Jimmy acts as the line between Castiel and Dean, touching Dean when Castiel can't, saying the things that Castiel never even realized were true, and in the end, helping Castiel to achieve the one thing he needed in order to let go.
Saving Dean.

Castiel declares himself God and what he doesn't know, but Dean suspects - he grows a baobab in his heart. The new almighty still has a soft spot for Dean and really wants him by his side. For what? He has no idea, but since this is the only way to have Cas fix Sam's deteriorating mind, he eventually agrees. Now Dean thinks living with Cas the God is the equivalent of having all your shit moved exactly three inches to the left while you were gone just to fuck with you. He can tell something is wrong, but he can't put his finger on it. It suddenly goes from awkward to terrifying when Cas has The Idea and for the love of fuck, he needs to be stopped at all costs. So Dean pays with all he has.
And it breaks him because you just can't make a horse drink.
Castiel can't accept this. He ventures into Dean's soul to "fix" him.
