Summary
Faith knew when Buffy died. Not because anyone had told her--no, Buffy’s little friends hadn’t had the decency to inform Faith herself. Something they didn’t tell you about having two Slayers was that you could feel it. And normally, you didn’t even notice the feeling, but then suddenly you woke up on your prison cot in a cold sweat, tears on your face and a feeling like someone had ripped out one of your organs and now there was just a void where something else was supposed to go. When Faith woke up like that, she knew exactly what had happened.
Basically, Faith feels Buffy die, and it (eventually) leads her back to Sunnydale just in time for the other Slayer to rise again. Season 6 rewrite where instead of Buffy seeking comfort from Spike, she seeks it from Faith

I needed to have Buffy use the gift, it is only polite. Also such a hot scene in Aftertaste. I needed to do it, there were be more because, damnnnn! That scene was a scorcher, and also filled with so much emotion that I need to do more.

“We can’t do this anymore,” Buffy says, pulling her top back on. “You held a knife to my best friend’s throat. It’s not happening again.”
“The knife or the sex?” Faith asks. Buffy’s focused on pulling her socks on, but she can practically hear the smirk forming.
“Both.”
“You can’t beat him, y’know. He’s all immortal and shit now.”
Buffy’s groan is slightly muffled as she shrugs into her sweater. “Enough about your boss, F. I’m not just gonna lay down and —”
“Lay down? What were we doin’ just now, yo?”

They survived the Mayor's Ascension after Faith turned down the offer to work for him. Now Angel is gone, and Buffy's spent the whole summer hanging out with the other Slayer, hoping to find a distraction for her broken heart.
Turns out the most distracting thing around her is Faith.
