“That’s that, then,” Ida bites, tipping her chin down to look at the box Erik had left by the door for them.
The edges of the cardboard spill over with soft knit blankets, the yarn pilling with age. Boxes of tea bags, a mug or two to accompany the chai—things that had been theirs once anyway. There’s a hoodie tucked inside, balled up and stained on the sleeves with paint. It looks a size too big for them.
Ida scuffs the corner of it with her soft-leather boots, not quite a kick, but not a kind motion either.
“Mama,” Tristan murmurs softly, their voice fragile. “Please don’t.”
Or...
Tristan returns home to pick up their things some time after getting kicked out over the phone, and there's no world where Ivy would let them do it alone.

Tristan turns to her again, more gasping words waiting on their tongue, when they see the tears.
She sees something in their face give way, something suddenly awake and horrified cracking underneath their quivering lip, but she can’t stick around to see what they’ve found. Dawn crashes down their shaking shoulders, and they immediately move to step closer, to come to her in some mutedly funny role reversal. Her chest feels concave, like something has torn her open and left her to die. It shouldn't, it isn't anything she hasn't heard before—

Tristan lashes out when Ivy pushes too hard. It’s the first time they've ever really hurt each other.
