    Shen Qingqiu takes on a mission to retrieve a rare medicinal plant that only grows in one place: The Labyrinthine Forest. It's a place so saturated with residual qi that a guide is necessary, lest one make zero headway into the woods or, worse, get forever lost in the endless maze of trees. The best fit for the job is a fellow Immortal known only as the Turtle Sage, whose knowledge of the Forest is all that will get Shen Qingqiu to the plant and back home safely.

    He expects the Sage to be a grisled, half-feral man, bushy and wild and smelly -- not, you know, an actual turtle.

He wouldn’t be able to ascend with the others anymore, wouldn’t be able to go on missions or use Xiu Ya any better than a mortal could.

    He could no longer practice inedia, or hell, even keep up with his disciples who already had half-formed golden cores. Who would listen to him now, who would respect him now? What good was a strategist who couldn’t keep up with the men he ordered around? What good was a teacher who couldn’t demonstrate anything he taught to his students?

    What good was a cultivator who couldn’t fucking cultivate?

    Shen Qingqiu manages to save Liu Qingge's life in the Lingxi Caves at the expense of his own cultivation and immortality. Now condemned to a short, brutish life as a mortal again, Shen Jiu chooses to leave it all behind and eke out a small living while he can, aware that death could be at his door any day now.
