She began it as a game to escape the noose. He saw potential. Jack just wanted a ship.
When Jack Sparrow’s sister Kat strikes a deal with an East India Trading Company bloke, the terms are simple: she stays as collateral, Jack gets a ship called the Wicked Wench. All of that's well and good for Jack, but sparks fly when Kat and this Cutler Beckett are left alone to play. And where there are sparks, fire is bound to follow, for worse or better.
Or: Cutler Beckett was not always miserable, and he intends to make it everyone’s problem. Fortunately, the sea gives Kat Sparrow advantages of her own.

She must appear as some drowned specter, climbing up from the riverbank with the hem of her white gown dragging behind her, dripping hair hanging heavy around her shoulders. She smolders with a dark inner heat, as though her blood has turned to molten metal in her veins.
The ring — his ring — burns in the palm of her hand, alive with wordless whisperings that claw and pry at the tender edges of her mind. She does not need to hear words to know what it whispers.

She'll do anything to prove he's not who he says he is, while he is willing to do anything to break her.
