Summary
It was a single moment. A second of inattention that could have cost them the victim, could have gotten them caught, or worse; he could have gotten them killed. Well, for a moment there, he thought he got himself killed, for sure. He underestimated their prey, had only the instinct to jump in front of Alastor when he saw them reaching for the knife. There was a muffled sound of something ripping and then nothing else, a burning pain on his side numbing his senses - when he caught his bearings again, Alastor had already wrestled the knife back and seemed enthralled in the task of hitting their victim's face repeatedly with the back of the handle.

Summary
Which is why, as he walks into his home after a long day at the office (that is a euphemism for the body he has just deposed of), he is planning a quick dinner followed by an early bedtime (that is not a euphemism – he is quite literally going to pass out). He is, therefore, taken aback when he finds the boy sitting in his living room, one of Alastor’s books in his hands and a smug smile on his face. His mismatched eyes are bright with amusement and mischief. He looks pleased with himself.
“How did you get in here?” Alastor asks, not wanting an answer, exactly, but the question is still forced out of him by the shock of the moment.
Vincent shrugs. “You keep a spare key in the hollow rock on your front porch.” Alastor’s eyes narrow. “It’s a stupid place for it.”
Alastor’s hands clench into fists despite himself and he only just manages to grit out the next word. “What?”
“Am I wrong?”
“Get out.” Alastor points to the door. “Now. Before I call the police.”
“No.”
