It was tradition to converge on Vivianne's house for the Christmas season. The crowning competitive event of this was, of course, pub trivia.
Raleigh edged closer to let a waitress pass between him and a table. “What’s the matter, Chuck? Stakes not high enough for you?”
Chuck shook his head. “Losing team does clean-up Christmas night. Whatever.”
“All right then.” Raleigh stepped in closer. No waitress this time: he just wanted to get into Chuck’s space. “Maybe a private wager’s in order. You can even set the terms.” -

Over the next few days, the situation didn’t improve; hell, if anything, it escalated.
Raleigh’s words seemed to have struck a nerve somewhere, and at seemingly random moments his skin would crawl and he’d find a weird Australian insult somewhere on his body. In response, Raleigh would either write something rude or simply draw the most ridiculous angry face he could manage. This would customarily be accompanied by a smirk down at the inevitably terrible picture.
It was the most unapologetically spiteful Raleigh had been in his entire life.

Raleigh Becket turned a page of his book with a slow and calm appreciation, determinedly ignoring the clangour of shouts and rattling chains nearing his cell. His relaxed pose - one hand behind his head, the other supporting the book resting on his stomach, one leg bent, the other lying flat on the mint-green bedsheets - remained unchanging, despite the emphatic river of curses flowing through the barred door.
The sound of another page turning was lost beneath the metallic slam of the door against the wall, and as Raleigh hummed at a particularly interesting sentence, two guards shoved someone in with evident relief.
Said someone then threw himself bodily against the swiftly-shut door, shouting obscenities which would’ve made Samuel L. Jackson blush.
