Summary
The thing about love is Virginia never knew she had it until she had it and even then she almost missed it.
For a long time, love was just a fairytale thought, and the reality of it, or the thing she called love, only left her with burns, ripped nails from refusing to let go, and an aching heart. Anything that came close to love only ever ruined her.
And that’s if she even had it in the first place.
That was the issue too, she never knew what love was. She knew what love wasn’t; contempt for Robert, something like admiration for Eric, a safe harbor in Abigail, longing for a life with Maya, all feelings and connections that never came close to something she’d die for, something she’d burn the world down, something she’d preserve with everything in her.
It wasn’t until she saw the bright blue eyes shining with devotion and a smile like hers, but a face shaped like the man she barely tolerates, heard a laugh like a bell and held the weight of her heart in her arms, that she learned what love was and was ruined in a whole new way.

Summary
The question of who Virginia Victory Wilson is less a question and more a riddle.
She stands as an embodiment of the ideology while inherently being a person that contradicts it. After all, setting aside the person bit of her, Virginia Victory Wilson is a state, a goal and a president. She contains the history of the nation, the ideals of that country and the leader who both first kept his people out of war and then took them, gloriously and enthusiastically, into it.
She’s supposed to be a certain idea of America personified. And yet she is none of those things as a woman. Her history is not grand or lofty, though it is painful. Her femininity is not glorious or sexy enough to be victorious. She’s never had the power to stop violence and for all she has always been able to initiate violence, that’s less a choice and more of a harsh tug.
She’s a thing of contradictions, of expectations and divergences, but in those she’s never found who she is, only what she is supposed to be and what she can’t be. Then one day none of that mattered. Who she was, who she could have been, who she should have been, it was stolen by JT’s chains and touch and water and who she is becomes nothing but broken pieces.

Summary
Virginia was used to feeling powerless. Like when God was creating Virginia Victory Wilson he infused marrow, suffering, calcium, and fear into her bones; anything to bring her down from the Victory her own name implied.
After all divine predominance was the only way to explain how Virginia could run to another side of the world and escape her father, her home, and her tormentors only to still end up here, stripped to her service shorts and bra, forced to kneel by some chains holding her to the wall in some godforsaken desert, hostage to the whims of men much stronger than her, completely powerless.
And while she didn’t know exactly how this happened or what the men who had her wanted or how she was going to escape, she did know she wasn’t dead yet, and that wasn’t changing anytime soon.

Summary
“You are being very kind to me,” he said, subdued.
“Far kinder than you deserve, I daresay,” said Gandalf. “There's nothing like a Took for making trouble, but you have outdone all your family tree, my lad.”
Pippin did not answer. At another time he would have risen to the barb, offered up the wide-eyed wounded innocence that had gotten him out of many a scrape, perhaps even found a way to slyly imply Gandalf’s culpability instead of his own – but he was sick and frightened, and something still hurt somewhere deep, something he did not want to think about.
Pippin reckons with what Sauron left of him.

Summary
Boromir was holding the Ring on its chain in his hand. Gold shone red under the weak sunlight, and his thumb swept over it with an odd tenderness. There was a strange light in his eyes.
“What are you going to do?” Pippin heard himself ask.
There was silence for a moment. Then Boromir laughed, sudden and loud and defiant in the still air. He turned and knelt down, and Pippin fought the urge to step back from the wild, angry joy in his face. He kept very still and did not flinch when Boromir took him by the shoulders.
“My friend,” Boromir said, the light red on his face and his eyes gleaming fey. “We are going to bring back the sun.”
Boromir takes the Ring.
