Summary
This is a rationalist and effective altruist take on the Last Herald-Mage trilogy, inspired by HPMOR, r!Animorphs: The Reckoning, and other works. From a starting point of "what if the characters were trying to be reasonable?" and "what if Leareth was a human being with real, complex motivations, rather than a cartoon villain?" I am seeing where it goes.
Meta note: this fic is accessible regardless of whether you’ve read canon. It starts out a little slow, and book 1 is kind of a different genre from book 2 onward. Additional warning that book 2 onward gets pretty dark and this doesn't really let up. There will be 11 volumes.
Major themes include the complexity of thinking about ethics, the challenge of taking on problems in the world that seem insurmountable, and trying to do good while dealing with serious mental health issues. The characters do not start out masters of rationality, but they do learn from their mistakes and grow as people, and do their best to help support each other.

The vampire wore a suit - though not one that looked to be tailored specifically to him, - and she supposed the hair was a similar enough shade of brown - though greased up with just a bit too much product and not looking nearly as soft to the touch as Elena had always secretly suspected Elijah's to be - but he was not, in this or any other universe, Elijah Mikaelson.

Elena and Elijah never lost touch after Willoughby, though they haven't met face to face since. When Elena finally goes to New Orleans a decade later to ask Elijah a question the first person she meets is someone pretending to be him to hit on women. Not Elijah... has not chosen a very good latest target.

Like in any of the preceding times where Elena initiated it, the kiss grew hungrier than it had been that true first time, when she'd turned around and was blindsided by the realization that the 'em' Katherine had sent her off to meet was Elijah Mikaelson.
She bit into his lip and let her nails cut into the skin on the side of his neck. A potent, familiar scent hit the air, and Elena let out a satisfied little growl near the back of her throat. She'd made him bleed. Good.
That's what he got for somehow getting her caught in a fucking time loop.

Groundhog!American Gothic — Elijah calls her Katerina and then kisses her. Two hours later, he does it again. And again. This is a lot of making out... it's also a lot of being called by the wrong name. Elena might be full of bone-deep apathy, but eventually something's gotta give.
