He watches, frozen against his own will, how Wangji’s attention returns to the fox, how he lays the shower head to the side in order to lift the too-small fox on his lap. His nephew adjusts the fox, keeps it gently in place with one arm, picks up the shower head again and returns to his task of washing the dirt out of the paws.

Lan Wangji recalled Jiang Wanyin having an affinity for dogs, keeping several of them in his home. How different was a fox, really? He looked out into the water, spying the quickly approaching boat. He would not have time to take it all the way back. But he couldn’t leave the fox here, either.
As he weighed his options, he failed to notice the fox had closed the distance and was now rubbing its snout over his hand. It made a sound akin to a purr, and after a brief pause, Lan Wangji scooped it into his arms and stowed it away inside his robes.
