    Summary

It’s starting to feel like this is not just about him feeling sorry for what happened earlier. Daniel says as much aloud, unable to help it even if it might mean shooting himself in the foot. Even if he might risk putting an end to this by giving it name.

“Hmm,” Rashid hums in feigned contemplation as he settles one knee on the bed beside Daniel’s hip. The index finger of his left hand dips underneath the sleeve of the older man’s cardigan. Runs along his pulse point, his veins. “What do you think it’s about, then?”

“No fucking clue,” he replies, his stare dragging up the line of Rashid’s throat, over the curve of his jaw, past his mouth and up to his eyes. The boy isn’t meeting his gaze, his lashes fluttering in the direction of Daniel’s wrist. His lips are parted slightly. He looks—he looks.

He looks horny. Wrecked. Devastatingly pretty.

Rashid huffs an airy laugh. “Liar.”

    Summary

"I know I might look naive to you, but I am an adult in my own right," said Rashid as he ashed his cigarette over the balcony railing. His voice was as soft as silk.

The bony part of his wrist peaked between the leather glove and the long sleeve of his shirt, so delicate and pretty that Daniel wondered if a strong enough gust of wind could snap it in half. Or maybe a hard grip would do the trick. "Mr. Du Lac is not my keeper. I do not need his permission to seek my own pleasure."

"So you try to fuck all your bosses' guests?"

Rashid shook his head. "No, only you."

    Summary

The boy is concealing his pain, his fear – this was the first lesson, Marius sees in his mind, taught on that first ship, with the captain: be pleasing or they will take their pleasure. If they are rough then you will bleed, and – an older lesson still, learned somewhere in the hazy childhood that feels very distant to him now, before the merchants – if you bleed too much then you will die. He desperately wants to be pleasing, to be safe, to live. And Marius, who has lived so very long, who has touched the minds of those who have endured even longer still, is captivated by what it is for this hurt, frightened young boy to want to live: a leaping candle flame, beside the low, steady burn of immortality.

An exploration of powerlessness. Louis dreams that he is Marius, a projection of Armand's nightmares, literally casting him as 'maître'.
